Advantages (Pros) of Artificial Intelligence
1. Reduce Human Error
Generally, Human error is the simple definition of the inaccuracy and inefficiency of humans. A lot has and is going wrong as a result of human error.
According to driverknowledge.com, the average number of car accidents in the U.S. every year is 6 million, more than 90 people die in car accidents everyday.
The typical cause of deaths are alcohol (40%), speeding (30%) and reckless driving (33%), which can all be tied down to ‘human error’.
The tendency of humans to err is naturally inevitable. These errors in a worst case scenario can result to loss of lives and properties.
Fortunately (and basically), artificial intelligence systems can reduce the degree of human errors as computer systems did.
Hence, the application of Artificial intelligence in various aspect of lives (like in self driving cars) overtime will greatly reduce human errors.
2. Increase Productivity
Artificial intelligence systems increase productivity in almost all areas of its application, partly because of its insane processing speed.
AI systems has the capacity to go through billions of data and take corresponding actions in matter of seconds. These ability alone is an automatic increment to productivity in most areas.
For bloggers like me, the use of AI systems in content generation has greatly increase our productivity. In my case, I use speech-to-text systems (an Application of AI) to create new blog post and with that, I have seen exponential increase to my productivity with respect to speed and ease of content creation.
3. Brings speed to decision making process
Decision making is a make or break process in every aspect of life. Every seconds we (humans) make a lot of decision consciously. From our deciding to breathe in and out, to making major life changing decisions; the role of decision making in life cannot be overemphasized.
Big organizations and individuals consider so many factors in order to make major decisions. In a situation where major decisions has to be made speedily most of the decisions made and taken are usually Hail Mary decisions, that mostly turnout bad.
Artificial intelligence systems can speedily consider all the major factors by analyzing hundreds-trillions of data and helping us make better informed decisions.
In a simple example, imagine a Netflix without its artificially intelligent recommendation system that recommends movies to users based on their interest.
The result will be a Netflix were thousands or millions of videos are listed and users have to click and view so many videos (most of which are uninteresting to the user) before deciding on a movie to watch. If you ask me, that will be the definition of a terrible user experience.
4. Reduce Cost of Goods and Services
In the long run artificial intelligence is going to greatly reduce the cost of goods and serivecs. Simply because it’s going (and is already) to cutting down production/operating cost, by reducing the need for manpower, among many other things.
Historically, when a new technology reduces the need for manpower, the result is usually a reduction in cost of goods and services at the long run.
5. Handles Repetitive Tasks Excellently
Artificial intelligence systems are greatly efficient and effective in carrying out repetitive tasks, as it is machine based. Take for instance, the application of AI in food making especially in restaurants, AI systems can produce the same recipe over and over again without getting tired or messing with quality.
6. 24/7 Availability
In executing non-stop tasks requiring intelligence, AI systems are breathtakingly advantageous. Because they can run 24/7 without stop, as they are not humans that will need to rest and go to break.
7. Handle low-level tasks
There are so many low-level tasks in our lives (like mowing our lawn or cleaning the floor of our homes/offices) that eat up a lot of our time and energy.
These low-level tasks can be handled effectively by AI systems on autopilot, allowing us the time to focus on high-level tasks that requires genuine (human) intelligence.
8. Open Up money making opportunities
The artificial intelligence boom has opened up many money making opportunities. Corporations and individuals have been reaping from those opportunities for years.
With every advancement in artificial intelligence more money making opportunities opens up.
It is no news that there are unemployed and employed people scattered across the earth, looking for money making opportunities.
And as such with many ways to make money with Artificial Intelligence opening up daily, everybody can benefit from the money making opportunities opened up by artificial intelligence.
9. Transform Health Care
Artificial intelligence has transformed so many sectors including healthcare sector.
The use of artificial intelligence in medicine and surgery has and is saving lives today. It has been deployed effectively in drug discovery, surgical procedures, medical examination and analysis among others.
10. Undertake Dangerous Exploration
Thanks to artificial intelligence especially in robotics, our brave men and women no longer need to risk their lives in dangerous explorations.
AI robots can undergo dangerous explorations instead of humans, like in the exploration of mars and many scientific exploration.
11. Improve Security
One can’t over stress how greatly AI systems has help secure lives and properties.
Artificial intelligence today is being deployed by security agencies to better protect lives and properties.
And they have proved to be effective especially in the space of cyber-security.
Artificial intelligence has not just improved modern security but totally transformed it.
Notable are its effectiveness in crime detection (especially fraud detection).
12. Transform Learning
The application of artificial intelligence in learning has seen a drastic transformation, especially in personalized learning.
With AI, students can now be taught personally according to their unique learning ability and characteristics.
13. Foster Communications
Years ago, people who speak different languages cannot communicate effectively without a human translator (one who speaks and understand the languages of all the parties).
But Artificial intelligence has made that a thing of the past with the advancement of artificial intelligence in natural language processing. AI systems can effectively translate from one major human language to another, eliminating the need for an interpreter.
14. Creation of new jobs
Artificial intelligence as a field of study and as an industry has resulted in the creation of new jobs since its founding days.
Jobs like machine learning engineers and programmers were a creation of artificial intelligence.
14. It can learn
Artificial intelligence is dubbed ‘intelligent’ partly because they can learn (by feeding on data).
When compared to traditional programs that can perform incredible tasks but are un-adaptive to new situations, AI is outrageously advantageous.
AI can adapts to new situations by learning from experiences.
Disadvantages (Cons) of Artificial intelligence
1. Will lead to loss of Jobs
Even though artificial intelligence has led to job creation. One of the major disadvantage of it, is that it will lead to loss of jobs.
Artificial intelligence is going to replace millions of jobs that are currently occupied by humans. One of the jobs to start feeling the heat of job loss as a result of AI is the driving jobs.
The advancement of AI in self driving cars is threatening to displace millions of jobs. Most jobs today are prone to an AI takeover.
2. Poses an existential risk
There is a major scare that artificial intelligence pose an existential risk to humanity. This has led to many asking “is artificial intelligence an existential risk?”.
The complex answer is simply “Yes”, artificial intelligence possess an existential risk. Even though that does not necessarily mean artificial intelligence will inevitably extinct humanity.
It simply means AI systems could potentially be intelligent and capacitated enough to destroy humanity.
3. It can be wrong
Artificial intelligence systems are greatly accurate but certainly they are not 100% accurate 100% of the time. And as such it can be wrong and hence not 100% reliable.
Artificial intelligence is been deployed in very sensitive areas especially in military and law enforcement.
Because AI systems are not 100% accurate always, when charged with sensitive responsibility and it goes wrong the result could be unfortunately fatal.
As fatal as AI systems ordering/launching drone attacks on a civilian population out of error.
Humans err and so do artificial intelligence systems, even though their percentage of error is significantly low.
4. Expensive to develop
Artificial intelligence has cost governments and private corporations billions (if not trillions) of dollars in its development so far.
The cost of developing artificial intelligence is simply too expensive.
5. No original creativity
Artificial intelligence systems today possess no original creativity. Even though artificial intelligence has been deployed in creative fields, it still lacks original creativity.
Humans has the ability to create something from nowhere (or nothing) being originally creative but not an AI system.
The creativity demonstrated today by artificial intelligence systems is simply transforming a creative work in order to create a new one.
This is demonstrated by many creative AI like Ai-Da (the world-first robot artist). The lack of originality in AI today has put a big question mark on its perceived “intelligence”, at least for now.
6. It cannot handle highly intelligent tasks
AI development have come a long way. It’s systems can carryout tasks considered as intelligent tasks.
Albeit, AI systems today can only carryout tasks that requires little degree of intelligence effectively and efficiently.
When it comes to highly intelligent tasks, they don’t stand a chance. As a matter of fact, even Google AI is no match to that of a 6 years old.
AIs are intelligent but on a human standard, they are miles away.
7. AI can do intelligent things but can’t explain
It takes a great deal of intelligence to explain oneself; so we’ve learnt from our AI Development journey.
Of a fact, AI systems are carrying out intelligent tasks, but, they can not explain why they do what they do. Cliché!
*This make many people wonder if AI systems are any different from other machines. Maybe they are a little bit glorified.
8. It can increase war destructiveness
A long time ago, war was not as destructive as they are. It took a lot of time and resources to bring down a city.
But not today. Not even I’m the mid-1900s: ‘Remember Hiroshima’. About Hiroshima, that’s really unfortunate.
But that’s what we get with technological advancements. AI’s gradual introduction in welfare is no different.
Talk about fully autonomous strike drones, or robot soldiers. It’s simply war destructiveness fired up.
9. Loss of Skills
Artificial intelligence will not just take away people’s job, it will lead go loss of their respective skills.
Imagine what will happen if AIs can effectively and efficiently replace bloggers like me.
It’s no doubt a lot of us (bloggers) will lose our jobs, but even more, the skill of blogging will eventually (whether gradually or rapidly) wane down.
And for the record, I don’t think AIs can take away my job (blogging about AIs), at least not while am alive.
10. AI’s abilities are limited to it’s training dataset
No. Not today!
Artificial intelligence systems can not think or operate outside the box: Outside the box of their training dataset.
They cannot carry out tasks that their training dataset doesn’t cover. No wonder what we have today are Narrow AIs.
Artificial intelligence has made so many things deemed impossible years ago, possible today.
It is transforming industries and impacting our daily lives. There is no doubt it’s going to play a major and positive role in the future of mankind. But one cannot ignore its disadvantages (dark side).
It’s important to keep in mind that artificial intelligence today is just getting started.
There will be more advancement in AI and with these advancement comes more advantages and disadvantages of AI.
